A
practical understanding of key Numeracy terms is an important part of confident Numeracy skills.
Take a look at the list and pick some to introduce in conversations
with your child.
Try and pick an appropriate time like talking about 'clockwise' and 'anti-clockwise'
whilst checking the time with your child.
When checking if they know what it means,
simply ask them to explain it in their own words.
Encourage them to use an example if they wish.
As usual if they get stuck,
you explain it to them and then later ask them to explain it to you.
If you need more help getting started,
start with words they are already comfortable with,
even if they are not connected to numeracy,
but might be linked to an interest they have.
This verbal game is great at helping your child become clear about concepts introducted by these numeracy terms.
Don't forget to have fun. Be relaxed and look for opportunities to share a laugh.
When children explain things from their point of view,
there's lots of scope to have fun.
Finally, remember to encourage your child when they start using the terms in their conversation.
Below is a list of carefully chosen Numeracy terms your child should know.
