Learning Track: Numeracy Part 2

What are the Factors of a Number?

T o learn about multiples, an understanding of multiplication and times tables is needed.

We'll start by telling you what a factor is, followed by some fully explained examples of finding factors and then an interactive Mini-Lesson on factors. We'll also tell you why factors are useful. Then we have a short factor quiz, which gives help when needed. Finally, we have a brief summary of factors. So let's get started... what is a factor of a number ?

Mini-Lesson: Factors of a Number

A FACTOR OF A NUMBER IS NUMBER THAT EXACTLY DIVIDES INTO THE NUMBER.

For example, let's 'find the factors of 4'...

We can find the factors in pairs.

We'll test each number from 4 downwards to see if it divides 4 exactly.

4 / 4 = 1, because 1 x 4 = 4. So 4 and 1 are factors of 4 (A NUMBER ALWAYS HAS ITSELF AND 1 AS FACTORS)

3 does not divide 4 exactly. So 3 is not a factor of 4

2 / 2 = 2, because 2 x 2 = 4. So 2 is a factor of 4 (we don't record the 2 twice)

Now we can list the factors of 4 in decending oreder as 4, 2, 1.

Here is an example where factors would be useful...

Now, let's use a 'number line' to see the factors of a number you choose.
