The position (or 'place') of each digit in a number indicates each digits' value in what makes up the whole number.
The place value of each digit is worth a different amount.
Check your child's knowledge of place value.

Ask your child how many tens and units (ones) there are in 23,
at first don't show them the number.
If they need more help then show them the number.
Answer is 2 tens and 3 units.
Ask your child how many hundereds, tens and units there are in 734,
at first don't show them the number, just say it.
The answer is 7 hundreds, 3 tens and 3 units.
Ask your child how many thousands, hundereds, tens and units there are in 5432.
The answer is 5 thousands, 4 hundreds, 3 tens and 2 units.

Also point out that commas are usually place after every 3 digits from right to left.

Now say some numbers to your child and ask them to write them down as numbers.
Some numbers have common 'names',
it is useful to know them.
A 'dozen' means 12.
A ton means 100.
