Learning Track: Numeracy Part 2

Numeracy Opposites

I n numeracy, opposites are important.

Generally speaking, doing the opposite of something gets us back to where were originally.

There are many words which have opposites -

Left / Right

Up / Down

High / Low

Slow / Fast

Heavy / Light

Hot / Cold

Clockwise / Anti-clockwise

Ask your child to explain the words above and give help when needed.

Can you and your child think of any other opposites ?

Opposites also exist for the maths operations of add (+), subtract (-), multiply(*) and divide(/). Consider a number line...

If we start from 0 and add 3, we are now at number 3. The opposite of adding 3 would take us back to 0 - that would happen if we took away 3.

Similarly if we took any nunmber and x by 3 we get 12. The opposite of multiplying by 3 would take us back to 4 - that would happen if we divdided by 3.
