K
nowing the value of things is a very practical aspect of numeracy.
Discuss the value of things in your home and when you are out at the shops with your child.
What's their most expensive toy?
What is the toy they play with the most?
Which toy has been the most value for money?
You can even make a walk in the high street an education...
For example, in an estate agent's window...
What's the most expensive house they can find?
What do you get for all that money?
Do they think it is worth it?
These activities will help them become aware of the range of costs of different things.
It will also help them become confident with numbers and amounts of money.
You can also play our version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionare?'.
It's a great game to play whenever you find yourself in a shop with your (bored) children.
The winner is the one who finds the most expensive item for sale.
If you want you can also have a winner for the cheapest item on sale.
A good place to start is at the supermarket.
However, to see how the other half live,
play the game in an big upmarket store and be perpared to be shocked!
