Learning Track: Numeracy Part 2

What are the Multiples of a Number?

T o learn about multiples, an understanding of multiplication and times tables is needed.

We'll start by telling you what a multiple is, followed by some fully explained examples of finding multiples and then an interactive Mini-Lesson on multiples. We'll also tell you why multiples are useful. Then we have a short multiples quiz, which gives help when needed. Finally, we have a brief summary on multiples.

So let's get started... what is a multiple of a number ?

Mini-Lesson: Multiples of a Number

A MULTIPLE OF A NUMBER IS WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU MULTIPLY THAT NUMBER BY ANY WHOLE NUMBER.

For example, let's 'find some multiples of 2'...

2 x any whole number = a multiple of 2 (this is from our definition of a multiple)

2 x 2 = 4 (2 times 2 is 4) So, 4 is a multiple of 2

2 x 1 = 2 So, 2 is a multiple of itself (infact every number is a multiple of itself!)

2 x 3 = 6 So 6 is a multiple of 2

2 x 10 = 20 So 20 is a multiple of 2

We can also 'list the multiples of a number'...

For example, let's list the multiples of 5...

5 (5 x 1 = 5), 10 (5 x 2 = 10), 15, 20, 25, we are just adding 5 on each time... this list goes on and on forever!

As you can see, if you know the times tables for a number you will know some of it's multiples.

Here is an example where multilples would be useful...

Now, let's use a 'number line' to see the multiples of a number you choose.
