Calculations: Order Matters!

T he order of doing calculations is important, changing the order could change the answer you get!

Explain to your child that the order of doing a calculation does matter when addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

We explain this using examples in the Mini-Lesson below.

Knowing how order of calculation is useful for doing 'Mental Maths'.

Mini-Lesson: Calculation Order Matters

ADDING UP CAN BE DONE IN ANY ORDER, THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS THE SAME.

2 + 5 = 7

Also

5 + 2 = 7

Spend a little time with your child so they understand this.

You can use groups of objects to show your child it does not matter what order you add things up.

FOR TAKING-AWAY, CHANGING THE ORDER OF THE CALCULATION DOES NOT GIVE THE SAME ANSWER.

Look at this example...

3 - 2 = 1

But if we swap the calculation around..

2 - 3 is not 1

Once again, use groups of objects to show this to your child to help them understand.

IN A CALCULATION BRACKETS, DIVISION, MULTIPLICATION, ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION HAVE A SET ORDER

THIS REMINDER 'BeDMAS' SHOWS THE CORRECT ORDER FOR CALCULATIONS.

Brackets - 1st do any calculations shown in brackets

e - ignore this letter

Division and Multiplication - 2nd do division and multiplication

Addition and Subtraction - 3rd do addition and subtraction

Here is an example...

(4 - 1) * 10 + 12 / 4

= 3 * 10 + 12 / 4 (worked out brackets first)

= 30 + 3 (work out division and multiplication next)

= 33 (work out addition and subtraction last)
