Learning Track: Literacy

What Exactly is 'Literacy' Anyway ?

'Literacy' is Simply Anything to do with Words

M ost of the time, we tend to talk about 'Literacy' only in the context of schools.

For this reason, it is easy to think of Literacy as a 'nice-to-have' skill with little practical use.

Some parents we spoke to, thought that Literacy was less relevant than Numeracy in day-to-day life. Some parents thought of Literacy as only reading and writing.

These parents may have had good reason to think this way, based on how they were tought.

Now, the way Literacy is tought in schools has changed, it's tought in a much more exciting and relevant way. For example, rather than your child simply left to write a story under their own steam, now they will be tought several ways of planning what the write, organising their ideas, correct use of puctuation, and so on. These skills are all transferable to thing they will have to do eventually outside of school.

Interestingly, all the parents we spoke to, did agree that listening and speech were very important life skills.

Boys Literacy skills tend to lag behind girls.

Too often neglected, listening and speech are very important life skills for your child.

Literacy is Everywhere

The programs we watch, the songs we hear, the advertising we see, the things we say... these are all forms of Literacy.

Literacy includes several very important life skills; listening, talking, reading, writing, spelling and punctuation.

These skills in themselves are the practical ways we use Literacy.

Confident Literacy skill requires imaginative, vocabulary and expressive skills.

The reality is that Literacy, in all it's forms, is very much relevant to us in our day-to-day lives.

Literacy is an critical skill for your child to master so they can succeed in life.
