Supporting Your Child’s School Reading

Y our school will have a well defined process for teaching your child to read.

These days, most schools, indeed governments, will have a policy of encouraging parents to support children's learning. Usually that message is strongest in asking parents to regularly read with their children.

Sadly this does not always happen, and children who would with their parents support easily meet a high level of reading will be doomed to underachievment.


Learning to Read Using 'Phonics' ('Letter Sounds')

Most school now use a 'Phonics' system to teach children how to read. This system relies on support from parents in giving their children necessary practice becoming familiar with each 'Letter Sound'.

Being Organised Will Help Your Child

Here is a checklist of things to be aware of -

What work has your child been asked to do at home.

When is any work due in by.

Reserve an amount of time to do the work when you and your child are fresh and not tired.

Don't make a big thing about homework, be enthusiastic about it.

Don't let any of your negative experiances about school or homework determine the outcome for yoru child. This is not so easy to do as it sounds simply because sometimes our experiences are all we have to go on. However there are other sources such as books dealing with the subject in question. Make sure you know where any reading material from school is, reserve a place for it and always put it there.
