Learning Track: Towards Numeracy

A Simple Number Book

C ontinue counting out items to your young child,

As a guide, children should be happy with counting at least to 10 before expecting them to recognise and understand numbers as symbols (0, 1, 2, ..., 10).

A great numbers book for bedtime are -

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle

"Best Counting Book Ever" by Richard-Scarry

Initially, just stick to the numbers 0 to 10. Make the point that if you have 0 of something, that means you have none of them.

Sometimes, get your child to trace over the numbers with their finger in the same way as you would write them. This is laying the foundation for writing numbers and is great a memory aid.

Point out numbers as you come see them when out-and-about.

Continue counting with your child as previously described.
